February 14

The date of February 14 forever has a new meaning for me and my family. Dad passed away on February 14, 2009. So, yesterday was the one year anniversary. I knew this weekend would be hard for our family but I feel that we celebrated Dad's life and remembered him and how much we loved him.
On Saturday morning, Sarah and I, along with friends Amber, Christine and Rachel, ran the Rush to Brush 5k in memory of Dad. After the race, Amber gave us a card that said that a long list of friends had donated to the Camp Bratton-Green scholarship fund in his memory. Well, of course we were surprised and honored that they did this. What wonderful and special people surround me, my sister and my mom!

On Sunday, we went to church and then drove out to Camp. This is where we went after his funeral to spread his ashes. On the way out there, Buddy put in a cd of some recordings that he had found in Dad's truck. (buddy transfered the recordings from a handheld recorder to cd...we have never heard them and he had saved them for us to hear on that day) The recordings were from Feb. 16th, 2006, while he was in the hospital after his surgery. He sang John Denver's Rocky Mountain High to my mom and wished her a happy birthday. Her birthday is Feb. 18. Needless to say, it was an emotional car ride to camp. We walked down to the lake to the same spot from a year ago and Buddy read from the Prayer Book. (yesterday was a cloudy and overcast day, grey clouds and cold) As he read a passage about God's light, the sun crept out from behind the clouds and cast a magnificent light on the lake. What an amazing moment! It was beautiful and the best way we could have celebrated our Dad one year after he left this earth. We know he's somewhere far more grand than here and I feel blessed that I can return to a place I love and cherish and know my dad's spirit is there too.

After our little trip to camp we went back to Mom's house where we all shared a wonderful meal and gave each other Valentine's happies. It will never just be Valentine's Day for me or my family. We will always remember Dad...husband, father, Pops...and remember how much love he had for his family and for life.
